At Google I/O 2014 today, Google has revealed some interesting figures about Android adoption. Having previously reported on cumulative activations, Google has switched its reporting to talk about 30 day active users – that is users who have been using their Android devices in the last 30 days.
Google’s senior Vice President for Android and Chrome, Sundar Pichai has announced that Android now has more than 1 billion 30-day active users. This is almost double the 538 million active monthly users that was reported at Google I/O 2013 last year.
Pichai revealed more information about Android usage. Android users are now sending out 20 billion text messages per day which is an incredible number but equates to an average of 20 messages per users. He also said that Android users are checking their phones 100 billion times per day (around 100 times per day per user) which is a very fair estimate and quite likely – I check my phone at least 100 times a day and quite often A LOT more than that.
Giving out more information about Android, Pichai went onto reveal that Android users take approximately 93 million selfies per day (a number that’s likely to grow even more with time).
Pichai didn’t stop there as he went onto reveal that Android tablets are increasing their global market share and the Android platform now accounts for 62% of market share. This is an increase from 46% reported last year and is no doubt helped by low cost devices launching every day from OEMs all around the world. On the subject of tablets, Pichai also revealed that YouTube (which is also owned by Google) has increased tablet viewership from 28 percent last year to 42 percent this year and this figure is likely to grow further as tablet adoption increases.
Overall adoption of Android is likely to increase even further with the new Android L platform, low-cost Android One devices and the new Android Wear powered smartwatches such as the Motorola Moto 360, LG G Watch and newly announced Samsung Gear Live.
